Know Your Beer

Ales: Beer brewed with a top fermenting yeast, at warmer temperatures.

HEFEWEIZEN
Unfiltered wheat beer that is light, crisp and fruity. Usually has a cloudy color.

STOUT
Full-flavored, hearty roast and malted.

AMBER
Red, deep copper in color. It is full-bodied with a malt sweetness.

PORTER
An abundance of roasted malt balances a fruity dry or caramel/toffee character.

SCOTCH ALE
Dominated by rich malt flavor often with a smokiness from peated malt.

PALE ALE
Crisp hop character with a subtle malt richness.

GOLDEN (LIGHTER ALE)
Often having a soft fragrant aroma.

INDIA PALE ALE
Hop spiciness in aroma and taste with citrus or floral notes.

BROWN ALE
Roasted malt character with a dry finish. Taste from a caramel sweetness to roast or chocolate.

FRUIT BEER
Refreshing aroma and essence of fruit is balanced by the taste of the base beer.

Lagers: Beer brewed with bottom fermenting yeast, aged longer at cooler temperatures.

PILSNER
Fragrant flowery hoppy aroma. The finish is often dry and crisp. Deep golden color.

BOCK
A springtime beer with moderately higher levels of alcohol. Lightly hopped with a malt sweetness.

MARZEN
Moderate maltness, deep amber in color. Often associated with octoberfest or winterfest beers.
